Body found in river identifiedPosted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. - Police say the body found in the river this morning has been identified as 44-year-old Jesse L. Smith. Detectives also confirmed that Mr. Smith was last seen in the river one week ago.
The body was recovered from the Spokane River west of the Post Street Bridge near downtown after a passerby spotted an object in the river just before 7 o'clock this morning. About an hour later dive teams recovered the body.
Last week Smith was contacted by River Front Park Security after a report of suspicious activity at the park. Smith was uncooperative and ran from security. Park security saw Smith attempt to cross the river and get swept away by the current. They tried to rescue Smith but were unsuccessful.
Smith's fellow employees were concerned when he did not show up for work the following day. Friday. They found his truck parked near Post/Mallon. They immediately filed a missing person's report.
Autopsy results are pending but the next of kin has been notified.
