Mariners beat the Blue Jays 2-1 in the 9thPosted: Updated:
SEATTLE, Wash. - Mike Hargrove is going out a winner. Hours after Seattle's manager abruptly resigned in a surprise move, Jose Guillen hit a tying homer in the eighth inning and a game-ending single in the ninth to help the Mariners edge Toronto 2-1 for their eighth straight victory.
Guillen's single off the glove of third baseman Troy Glaus ended the finale for Hargrove, who quit in the middle of his 16th season as a major league manager. Hargrove pumped his right arm toward the stands for the last time to celebrate his 1188th and apparently final managerial win.
Each of the Mariners then hugged Hargrove in front of their dugout before the 57-year-old tipped his cap to the cheering crowd. Frank Thomas hit his 501st home run for Toronto.
