SEATTLE, Wash. - Gary Sheffield hit the 12th grand slam of his career Friday night, giving Detroit all the offense it needed as the Tigers beat the Seattle Mariners, 6-3.
Mariners starter Jarrod Washburn struck out a season-high seven Detroit batters, but he also allowed seven hits and walked three, losing for the first time since June 17th against Houston.
Seattle got solo homers from Jose Guillen and Adrian Beltre, and an RBI double from Jose Vidro to account for its three runs.
Mariners All-Star outfielder Ichiro Suzuki, who earlier in the day signed a $90 million, five-year contract extension with Seattle, was 1-for-4 at the plate.
The loss snapped Seattle's nine-game winning streak at home. It was the Mariners' longest home winning streak since a club-record 11-game streak in 2001. (The Associated Press contributed to this story.)
