Tammy Faye Bakker Messner dies at age 65

Posted: Updated:

Former televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker Messner, the woman known for her love of Jesus Christ, has passed away. Messner's family told CNN's Larry King that she died Friday morning and has been cremated.

Her early fame came as Tammy Faye Bakker, as in the wife of Evangelist Jim Bakker. For more than a decade, they dominated the world of TV evangelism through their Praise the Lord show.

In 1987, Jim Bakker resigned amid a sex scandal involving church secretary Jessica Hahn, and was eventually convicted of charges including fraud and tax evasion.

After Bakker had been in jail for about a year, Tammy divorced him and married family friend and church builder Roe Messner, but Messner also ended up in prison.

By 2004, cancer from a decade earlier resurfaced for Tammy. She had been battling inoperable cancer and spoke on King's show just this past Wednesday. She also said she couldn't swallow food and only weighed 65 pounds.
