Former Idaho safety Taupule sentenced for holding up pot dealer
MOSCOW, Idaho - Former University of Idaho football player Tone Taupule has been given a conditional sentence of five to 15 years in prison for robbery.
The 23-year-old pleaded guilty in May after prosecutors agreed to drop a weapons enhancement and an aggravated battery charge. He robbed fellow student Sean Fitzmaurice. Taupule claimed Fitzmaurice frequently sold marijuana to Vandals players.
Second District Judge John Stegner told Taupule he would retain jurisdiction and re-evaluate Taupule after he spends six months in prison. If Taupule does well in prison, he could be given a shorter sentence or released.
He was arrested after Fitzmaurice told police that the football player pistol-whipped him and stole $1000.
