Red Cross responds to apartment fire

SPOKANE, Wash.American Red Cross volunteers responded to an apartment fire on North Regal Friday. Red Cross volunteers are assisting the residents of nine units, providing shelter, food and clothing. Professional Red Cross nurses and mental health workers are also on duty helping with the physical and emotional needs. 

What You Can Do to Help
All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, and relies on voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. You can help the victims of this fire and other disasters by making a financial gift to the Inland Northwest Chapter's Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to those in need.

Contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund can be made by calling 509-326-3330. Contributions may also be sent to the American Red Cross, Inland Northwest Chapter, 315 West Nora Avenue, Spokane, WA  99205.  Internet users can also make a secure online credit card contribution by visiting www.SpokaneRedCross.org.

One doctor who witnessed the abuse told investigators in court documents it was "one of the worst cases of child abuse he had seen in 23 years of practice."

(AP) - North Carolina authorities say a man fatally shot by a teenager while strangling the girl's mother had faced domestic violence accusations in multiple states.    The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office said 46-year-old Steven Kelley assaulted the mother at least one other time before the Aug. 8 attack that ended with his death.
