Little growth in Bridge fire

Posted: Updated:

LOLO, Mont. - The 21,000 acre fire located at the Bridge Creek drainage had little growth Sunday August 12th. The fire is within the Clearwater national Forest two miles North of the Elk Summit Guard Station.

The fire started because of a lightning strike July 25th. Firefighters initially responded to the fire by stopping its spread west toward Elk Summit Road 360 until all people were evacuated from trails and campsites along the road. Structure protection was completed immediately for the Elk Summit Guard Station and five wooden bridges in the area.

The fire continues to burn west of the road just north if its junction with Kooskooskia Meadows Road 359. The fire's main direction of growth is eastbound into the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness area. It will likely burn until there is a significant, season-ending weather event.

Powell Ranger District is closely monitoring and evaluating the fire because of its remote location and scarcity of firefighting resources. The public is asked to refrain from entering the closed areas extending north to Beaver Ridge Road 369.
