Spokane gets first shutout, move back into first place

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - Historically, pennant races tend to heat up in the month of October, but the Spokane Indians (27-30) and Boise Hawks (27-31) are already battling it out for supremacy in the Northwest League East Division. After falling out of first place with a loss to Boise, Spokane moved back into a half game lead over the Hawks with a 3-0 victory Saturday.

Indians starter Jacob Brigham (5-3) contributed mightily to the first shutout by Spokane this year, opening the game with three hitless innings and finishing the game with 5.2 frames pitched, with five strikeouts, three hits and the win.

Spokane took the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Timothy Rodriguez drove in Ian Gac with an RBI single. That's how the score would remain until the eighth as the Indians' relief pitching combination of Daniel Sattler, Tommy Hunter and Andrew Laughter allowed only one hit in the final three frames of the game. The entire bullpen also wowed the crowd of 5,109 at Avista Stadium with their synchronized leg-crossing routine and received an ovation for their efforts.

Two more runs would score in the bottom of the eighth for Spokane as Renny Osuna and Jonathan Greene both drove in runs. That set the stage for Laughter, who struck out two batters in the ninth and picked up his ninth save of the year.

The Indians have a half game lead over Boise, and play the final game of their homestand against the Hawks Sunday for Hawaiian.
