Montana escapes with 24-23 win over Eastern Washington
MISSOULA, Mont. - Dan Carpenter kicked a 34-yard field goal with 26 seconds left to lift top-ranked Montana to a 24-23 victory over Eastern Washington Saturday afternoon in Missoula.
Eastern Washington had taken a 23-21 lead on a 39-yard field goal by Felipe Macias with 2:20 remaining. On Montana's next drive, on a fourth-and-10 play, Cole Bergquist passed to Ryan Bagley, who laid out to catch the ball for a 27-yard gain.
After a 12-yard pass to Mike Ferriter and three incompletions, Carpenter kicked the game-winning field goal. He had missed an earlier field goal attempt.
Eastern Washington rolled up 565 yards in total offense. Quarterback Matt Nichols completed 37 of 59 passes for 451 yards and two touchdowns.
Aaron Boyce had a school record 17 catches for 232 yards and a touchdown for the Eagles. Brynsen Brown also had a touchdown catch. Bergquist passed for 181 yards and touchdowns to Bagley and Mike Ferriter, while Lex Hilliard rushed for 70 yards and a third-quarter score.
