Rossi expected to run against Gregoire in '08

Posted: Updated:

OLYMPIA, Wash. - It looks like Republican Dino Rossi will make another run at the governor's mansion. The former state senator is widely expected to announce his second campaign for governor at events scheduled around the state this week.

Spokeswoman Jill Strait says Rossi is scheduled to announce his 2008 political plans on Thursday, in Issaquah and Spokane. She wouldn't give more details about his announcement. But Republican sources -- speaking on condition of anonymity -- say Rossi will announce his 2008 candidacy.

Rossi lost to Democrat Chris Gregoire by 133 votes in 2004, after three vote counts and a court challenge. Rossi adviser Fredi (FREDDY) Simpson says the nearly 700-person turnout at the state G-O-P's recent "Run, Dino, Run!" fundraiser energized the Rossi camp for another run. Gregoire hasn't officially announced her own re-election bid. But she's raised more than $3 million for the campaign, held another fundraiser Monday in Washington, D-C.
