Nuggets Top Sonics

Posted: Updated:

DENVER, Colo. - The Seattle SuperSonics got 18 points from rookie Kevin Durant, but lost to the Nuggets 120-103 in a regular-season opener for both teams tonight in Denver.

Playing 31 minutes, Durant shot just 7-of-22. He was the second player chosen in June's NBA draft.

Damien Wikins had 21 points, Delonte West 19 points, Nick Collison 11 rebounds and Johan Petro 10 rebounds for the Sonics, who played their first game under new coach P.J. Carlesimo.

The Nuggets pulled away in the final quarter after leading 86-81 after three periods.

Denver got 32 points from Carmelo Anthony, 25 points from Allen Iverson and 15 rebounds from Marcus Camby.

The Sonics today passed on contract extensions for center Robert Swift and West, a guard, making them both restricted free agents after this season.

The 21-year-old Swift did not play tonight and is recovering from knee anterior cruciate ligament surgery. West was acquired this summer from the Boston Celtics and the team is uncertain how he fits into its future.

The Sonics will play their home opener at the Key Arena Thursday night at 7:30 against the Phoenix Suns.
