Man who tried to assassinate George Wallace released

Posted: Updated:

BALTIMORE, Maryland- Arthur Bremer has just been released from prison, after 35 years behind bars for attempting to assassinate George Wallace. In 1972, Bremer shot the presidential nominee during one of Wallace's campaign stops.

His plan was to gain notoriety and awaken the world with a force of will by assassinating the Nixon's chief rival. At a campaign rally, Bremer fired a .38 revolver at Wallace, hitting him and paralyzing him for the rest of his life.

Wallace dropped out of the race and remained in a wheelchair the rest of his life.

Bremer was released today for good behavior and for holding down a prison job for so long. Officials say they have no word on Bremer's future plans. Under the conditions of his release, Bremer must stay away from any local, state, federal or foreign elected officials and any current candidates.
