Cougars hope to have new coach by Jan. 1

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State Athletic Director Jim Sterk says he hopes to have a new football coach by Jan. 1.

Sterk and 67-year-old Cougars coach Bill Doba announced on Monday that Doba would not return for the final two years of his contract. Doba reportedly will receive between $1.5 million and $1.8 million from the university's Athletic Department.

The Cougars haven't been to a bowl game since 2003. In five seasons, Doba posted a 30-29 record, including 5-7 this season.

Doba's coaching staff is not expected to be retained.

Sterk says the Cougars will make no public statement regarding the candidates they are considering to replace Doba.
