They trailed only the New York Yankees ($218,311,394), World Series champion Boston Red Sox ($125,581,316), Los Angeles Dodgers ($125,581,316), New York Mets ($120,927,727) and Chicago Cubs (115,943,318). The Yankees had a record payroll.
The American League West champion Los Angeles Angels ($111,038,577) were seventh.
The Mariners' other two division opponents, the Texas Rangers ($78,923,435) and the Oakland Athletics ($78,482,125), ranked 17th and 18th, respectively.
