Young Performers Take the Stage in Spokane
Today I went over to the Bing Crosby Theater in downtown Spokane to check out the dress rehearsal for the Christian Youth Theater's (CYT) presentation of 'The Little Mermaid'. This is not the Disney version, but it is a musical with different songs.
If your not familiar with the CYT it's a pretty cool program. They're a non-profit after-school theater arts program for kids ages 6-18. They hold 10 week classes in the fall, winter and spring and during the Summer they hold summer theater camps.
The performances that they put on are the big fundraisers for the program. The money raised selling tickets goes right back into the program and future productions.
I have to tell you, these kids are talented. Just listening to there vocal warm-ups, before rehearsal, I was blown away. These kids have pipes and they conduct themselves like real professionals. It's also a big thrill for these young thespians to be performing on a real theater's stage like the Bing Crosby's. In addition, I have to say I was pretty impressed with the makeup and costumes that I saw while I was there. You might even want to keep an eye out for a special appearance from a certain someone from Bikini Bottom.
Upcoming Events include 'Disney's Beauty and the Beast' at the end of May. And Dancing with the Celebrities' in which KHQ's very own Jennifer Kim will glide across the stage and dazzle us with her fancy footwork. That show is coming to the Bing Crosby for one night on March 31.
So if your looking for some family friendly Theater and you want to help support our local theater students, check out 'The Little Mermaid'. The show starts Friday February 22 and show dates are the 23,24,29 and March 1. Tickets are 12 dollars at the door and 9 dollars on line for adults.
I'm also posting some video of my visit to the rehearsal on the Local Entertainment Spokane Spotlight page, so you can get a little sneak peak of what you can expect.
