Today I got to interview the star of the musical "Gypsy" that is being performed at INB Performing Arts Center. The production is part of the current WestCoast Entertainment, Best of Broadway Series.
Kathy Halenda stars as Mama Rose in the Musical. Ms. Halenda has been acting for twenty-five years and has performed in over 180 productions, including 12 national tours. Her credits include the title roles in "Mame", "Hello Dolly", "Evita" and "Annie Get Your Gun". As a seasoned performer in theater her advice to those trying to break into the business is, "Get a college education, and try and act in any and everything you can".
I have to say that it was a pleasure to meet Ms. Halenda. She was very energetic, witty, and very gracious for granting me an interview. I'm posting the video of the interview on the Local Entertainment Spokane Spotlight section of the web site and attaching it to this story.
The musical "Gypsy" first hit the stage in 1959 with music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. It is loosely based on the 1957 memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee a famous striptease artist. The play mainly focuses on the character of her mother, Mama Rose, whose character has been referred to as "the ultimate show business mother".
The show contains tons of songs including the popular "Everything's Coming up Roses" sung by Mama Rose. .
The show kicked off last night and will run through February 24 at the INB performing arts center. This particular touring production began performing around the country about 4 months ago
There are two shows left in the 2007-08 Best of Broadway season. 'Mama Mia" runs at the end of March, and "Disney's High School Musical On Tour" will start the end of April and run to the beginning of May.
