Proposition ballot language clarified
SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane County officials are concerned that voters may be confused about the ballot that arrived in the mail recently.
The county has been receiving calls asking about Proposition No. 1, the one-tenth of one-percent sale and use tax for Juvenile Detention Facilities and Jails. Apparently, the confusion is over the words "Detention Facilities and Jails" and whether this ballot measure is to fund the construction of the new jail. In a word - No.
Proposition No. 1 asks voters to decide on renewing the one-tenth of one-percent sales and use tax for the maintenance and operation of Juvenile Detention Facilities and Jails. The voters approved the imposition of this tax that went into effect on January 1, 1996. Proposition No. 1 does not fund the design and construction of a new detention facility (see ballot language on page 2). Voters will see the bond measure for a new jail on the November 2008 ballot.
