WIAA State 2B Tournament underway in Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. - 640 athletes and coaches, and over 1,000 fans from across Washington State will be in Spokane for the State B Tournament. The hospitality industry is preparing for over 4,000 guest room nights, for the February 27-March 1 WIAA State 2B Boy's & Girl's Basketball Tournament.

Once again the tournament will bring money to the community, $1.5 million in economic impact. 52 years of tradition is going strong at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena.

The 2008 tournament will have the same format as all the B tournaments of the past. Sixteen boys and 16 girls teams will represent small high schools from across the state. Five boys and five girls teams from Eastern Washington will add some local flavor. Teams will be coming from the Bi-County, Panorama and Blue Mountain 2B Leagues.

"What I have always enjoyed about small school basketball tournaments is the spirit of the players and fans. Because of their size there is a real connection between the members of the teams, their school, and the communities they represent. That spirit seems to be felt and shared by people who attend the tournament with no real connection to these schools.

The tournament is a family tradition.  Many players have had moms, dads, aunts, uncles and grandparents who played in B tournaments in Spokane in past years.  These families take great pride in watching the latest family member hit the court at the Arena.

It's a once a year event that provides Spokane with some small town but GREAT basketball.  It's the best show in town," says 2B tournament director Mick Shultz.
