No TV!

I made a trip to the baby-store this weekend to scope out some more stuff for Bun.  It's getting harder and harder to go through a baby-section in a store without buying something.  I did pick up something for myself - a body pillow.  I'd heard that when you're pregnant, you're not supposed to sleep on your back.  I'm a solid back-sleeper.  I found a wrap-around body pillow called a "Snoogle" that's supposed to help keep you on your side at night.  Now that my belly is starting to really poof out, it's nice to have the support - but it's still hard to keep on my side.

I also bought a few Sesame Street DVDs. They're mostly for myself, but when Bun's 2 or so, I'll share.  I'd like to stick to records and face-to-face playtime until 2 years old.  I read on the American Academy of Pediatrics website that

"Research on early brain development shows that babies and toddlers have a critical need for direct interactions with parents and other significant care givers for healthy brain growth and the development of appropriate social, emotional, and cognitive skills."

This came from an article about the AAP urging parents to avoid television for the first 2 years of development.  We're excited about finding other activities away from the tube to do with Bun.  Stories, music, outings - there are lots of things to do, and creating good "down-time" habits early will hopefully pay off in the end.

My sister is a music teacher, and is already planning some fun musical activities for us to do with Bun from birth on - everything from "music blocks" (just like the ABC blocks we're used to seeing, but with musical symbols and terms on them) to baby-safe instruments.   Billy and I both play instruments, so we're looking forward to adding a tiny audience member (and future band-mate) to our family music nights!
