Double Trouble

March 6, 2008

We were supposed to go in on Wednesday for a doctor's appointment, and to see what Bun's sex is.  Turns out, our doctor had an emergency to attend to, so we were pushed back to Friday morning.    I'm okay with it now, but when I received that call, it was as though someone had just called to tell me that Christmas was cancelled.  I was so bummed.  A few tears, a little consolation from Billy, and I was okay.  Still bummed - but better.

I'm really looking forward to tomorrow.  We're getting some sort of uber-detailed ultrasound, since Billy and I both have people who had heart problems from birth in our families (one with murmurs and the other with a hole in the heart).  We just want to be sure that everything is healthy in there.

As a plus, we get to find out if Bun is a boy or a girl.   Everyone has speculated about it - and their reasons for their guesses are really varied.   Shelly Monahan thinks we're having a girl, mostly based on my cravings.   I've been craving lots of veggies, and when she had her girls, she says she just went nuts noshing on iceberg lettuce.    My sister and my mom think we're having a boy, though they're both rooting for a girl.  Billy's mom and one of his sisters think we're having a girl - or at least, his sister is hoping for a girl - right now, her daughter is the only female of the cousins.   My sister's husband thinks it's a girl based on his scale of "deservedness."  When his friends or their wives get pregnant, he bases his guess on what kind of teenager they were.  If they were a party-animal, usually he'll guess "girl".  If they were reserved and relaxed, he'll guess "boy".  He says it's because a girl will force calm on a party animal, while a boy will bring out the wild side of a reserved person.  Interesting.  I guess we're party-animals who deserve some calming.    I'm okay with that.

Billy and I talked at length about it last night, and for the first time we addressed a big "what-if'...

Twins.

While we only heard one heartbeat on the sonogram, it is possible that there is a second in there that was behind or in-synch with the one we heard.  I do feel like I'm pretty big for how far along I am.  The books I've been reading suggest that morning sickness and moodiness will be worse, if not doubly bad when you're carrying twins.  Morning sickness was yucky for me, but not horrible.  The moodiness was definitely bad when I was in the first trimester.  Hmm.  My aunt on my dad's side had twins.   It scared us a little.

We can't afford day-care, but I'm fortunate enough to have a flexible schedule so that when Billy's done with his super-early schedule on the morning show, we can "trade-off' with the baby (or babies?) around noon.  That arrangement might serve to be extremely difficult if we have twins.   The one-to-two ratio, especially when they're newborns,  scares us both quite a bit.

But that's just Billy & I getting ahead of ourselves.  We won't find anything out until Friday morning...
