What Will Her First Day at School be Like...For Me?

I was thinking today about all the great and sometimes outlandish stories other parents have shared with us about THE first day of school, and since we're not exactly young parents (but not OLD either!) we've heard plenty. The general ‘gist we've taken away from those tales is that sending your child to school is one of those times that stands out in your mind among all the of those we will have the pleasure of experiencing as "moms" and "dads."

Friends have described it as a very sad day, others as a happy time, but most stories are a mixture of something wonderful and scary all at the same time. Wonderful because it's a new chapter in your child's life and you want her to have a great experience. Scary because it's a reminder that we're the grown-ups this time around and our child is counting on us to know what to do and to how to behave.

One mom told me how she put on her grown-up "I-got-this" face walked her little girl to the classroom, smiled, gave her a kiss, and then walked back to her car and proceeded to have a 10-minute bawl-the ugly cry, snotty nose, and puff-eyes-all-day type of cry!

I have another friend who recently told she remembers being relieved when her little boy started school because it meant she didn't have to pay daycare anymore. See she was a single mom working to make ends meet and that first day of school meant she had a little more money in her bank account each paycheck, so the dream of financial stability is the strongest memory she has from that day.  Wow.  That sure put it all into perspective for me.

A work colleague told me he and his wife were joyful when his son started school because he was ready-they were ready-and "it was fine." You gotta love the way most guys can see things like this in an uncomplicated way.  I have that skill on most other topics but I have no illusions that I can pull it off on this one, but you can be the judge of that if you continue to read along as we count down to September!

I image Macy's first day of school is going to be a mixture of all the good stuff and a little of the sad, weepy stuff-this life experience cannot be scripted, completely planned-for or predicted and I wouldn't have it any other way. Whoa what a ride, eh?
