It's Time to Register Already?

Posted: Updated:

March 10, 2008

There's a grade school on my way to work and today I noticed that the reader board had a message on it about Kindergarten registration. I think I shrieked out loud.  It's only March how can it be time to register already?  I don't remember registering for Kindergarten six months before school, but granted I was all of five-years-old so there is a possibility that my memory is a little flawed, but come, on!  My indignant, sarcastic self is saying: don't these "school people" know that we (lumping all first-time parents in here with me) don't know these things? How are we supposed to know when it's time to register our children? What if my commute didn't include driving by this sign?  Is it really this hit-and-miss or are we the only ones who didn't know it's time?

Of course, my more rational self said: OK I got this. No problem....time to register OK I'll make a mental note and take care of it. I proceeded to call Mike on his mobile phone and when he picked up I skipped the hello and just said "It's time" with a little bit of anxiety in my voice. He knows me oh-so-well so he simply replied with "Oh, hey....what?" I explained it and he said "Whoa. Already?"

At lunch today I went to the school district's web site looking for information about Kindergarten registration and was disappointed to find very little information out there. My irrational self had a little rant again thinking don't "these people" know there are thousands of parents out here who are sending a child to school for the first time? The marketing professional in me immediately thought about all the ways they could give us more information on the web site.

I settled for calling the grade school in our neighborhood and asking the woman who answered about registration and she said, "yep it's coming up pretty soon...in May I think." I told her the web site said it's March 24 but that there wasn't any more details provided, and she said "Oh yeah that sounds right." I asked about full-day Kindergarten and was told they don't offer it in our district. I asked about the hours/days etc. and when I hung up I thought Holy Cow! Doesn't she realize we need some information here? Not everyone has done this before and a bit more information would be helpful so we can do our part. That conversation was like pulling teeth. The woman answered my questions but nothing more and she was a little put off.

Is there something I don't know? Should I be getting my information somewhere else? If so, why didn't she just say so? If not, how about a little love for the first-time parents, hum? Thinking back to the secretaries at my grade school I know their jobs were tough-lots to do with little resources-and I imagine that hasn't changed much. So I'm going to just give her a pass and assume she was having a bad Monday. I'm sure they get lots of calls from parents asking the same questions, which brings back to mind why not just put it all out there on their web site?  Hummm...I marked our calendar for registration day and we'll look for answers to the rest of our questions then.
