Before you have a shot at kindergarten...you need a few shots

Posted: Updated:

March 17

Macy has had a strange rash on her arm so I called her pediatrician's office tonight to ask a nurse about it and get advice on treatment.  In the process I told the nurse Macy had just turned five and asked about five-year-old shots.  The nurse told me there was no rush but if we plan to enroll Macy in kindergarten for this fall we should make an appointment right away.  I think her exact words were "there's no reason to rush on our part, but I think schools are enrolling now for kindergarten and you cannot complete registration and be guaranteed a spot unless she's current on her shots."  I did not know this.  It's times like this that I feel really old because I immediately thought about how in my day we just had to have our shots before the first day of school. Things have certainly changed.

The nurse told me kindergarten spots can fill up fast; and it depends on which district we're in but if we're delayed Macy might not get to attend the school closest to our house---we might have to bus her to another school.  That sure got my attention. Seriously?! I had no idea!  I feel like a parrot a lot in the last few weeks, but I heard myself saying to the nurse, I can't believe we didn't know this.  Yet again I feel like I stumbled on an important step in the process. That's the first time I saw a negative to having such a healthy child-because Macy hasn't been in to see the pediatrician since this time last year we didn't receive their standard notice on this topic.

I talked with the nurse a few more minutes and she said they hear all kinds of crazy stories about families who have to develop elaborate transportation plans to get their child to and from another grade school every day because the school in their area filled up before they registered.  Yikes.  I didn't even know that could happen!

Needless to say, while I was on the phone with the nurse I made an appointment for Macy to get her shots Friday afternoon and Kindergarten registration begins next week.  Whew.  That was close. We cannot possibly be the only ones who have general ideas of what to do when, but not the exact details. Seriously, someone (maybe me???) should develop a checklist for parents who are new to the kindergarten registration process so we don't bumble and stumble our way along!
