Rock Lake fire 80% contained; Injured firefighters released from hospital

WHITMAN COUNTY, Wash. - Fire officials said Wednesday the wildfire burning along the Spokane County - Whitman County border northwest of Rock Lake has burned 2000 acres and is now 80% contained.

Two firefighters injured fighting the fire have been released from the hospital.

No homes have been damaged so far, and there are no evacuation orders in place.

Fire bosses warn citizens that fire danger levels continue to remain high and advise caution with all flammable materials.

The fire began Monday night, as strong winds and lightning passed through the area.  It rapidly grew to cover approximately 3,500 acres of both forest land and sagebrush, as well as some farm land.

Cool weather Tuesday morning aided firefighters, who said they likely could get the upper hand on the fire before the day is through.

50 to 60-mile-an-hour winds drove the fire Monday night and initial crews had to pull back off the fire line.  Fire officials say that the fire was most likely started  by a lightning strike.
