Three Weeks Old

Posted: Updated:

Wow.  The past three weeks have flown by.  Where do all of the hours in the day go?  I'll tell you where they go - in the diaper pail, the nursing chair, the bouncy swing, the laundry basket, the breast pump, and back again - and that's just the baby stuff...that doesn't count the mommy maintenance that may or may not happen.

Mom told me I'd feel more like myself by a month into motherhood -- physically, I feel pretty normal now, so I'm just a little bit ahead of the curve.  I'm still feeling a little "floppy" in the tummy department, but that's the one place that I know will take much more time, especially since I started out a little "floppy" before we even got pregnant!

Enough about me - my little man is the greatest.  Everyone told me, "you haven't experienced love like the love of motherhood".  They were so right.  This little person is the most beautiful, amazing guy I've ever met.  My husband has turned into the most amazing father too.  He's an absolute natural at it.  He said he felt like he was born to be a dad - I'm sure he's right.  He's so good with Victor, who really responds to him well.  Sharing chores and tired time, I'm finding is key to keeping up with the baby and each other.

Breastfeeding has become a fun bonding experience for Vic and I.  He looks up at me with his big eyes and coos while he eats (I call him my little "gourmet", because every few "bites", he goes "mmmm...").   I sing him songs and tell him stories.   I love the time spent making up stories in the rocking chair, and I'm thinking that someday when I have some spare time (spare time?  what's that?), I should write them down so Vic can "illustrate them" when he's old enough for crayons.  I came up with a story the other night about a String Bean who decided to venture out of the country garden and into the big city, where he met "city foods" like burgers and fries... it was really cute.   I love that Vic is getting all the nutrition he needs from breastmilk, but I'm worried about having enough banked in the freezer for when he goes to daycare.  I'm pumping every chance I get, which feels like all hours of the day.   We've added a couple of bottle-meals during the night so both Billy and I can get the most out of our sleep-time and still give Vic all he needs.  I was worried about creating nipple-confusion by adding the bottle, but he took to it right away and hopped back on the breast again in no time.   Whew!

We had our first social smile a few days ago.  Sure, we've had gas-smiles and whiz-smiles (if he gives us a big grin during a diaper-change, WATCH OUT!), but he just started smiling as a reaction to sights and sounds.  It's just adorable.

Oops -- I guess I've spent too much time writing...baby is calling! :)
