Spokane soldier killed by IED in Iraq

SPOKANE, Wash. - A Spokane family is in mourning after Combat Engineer Specialist 23-year old Carlo Alfonso was killed in Iraq on August 26th, 2008.

Alfonso was stationed in Germany with the 40th Engineering Battalion and deployed to Iraq in April 2008 for a 15-month tour.

Alfonso was killed by an IED on August 26th. Two other soldiers were injured in the blast. One of those soldier lost both legs in the explosion, and the other returned to active duty with cuts and scrapes.

Carlo was not yet an American citizen, and studying to get his citizenship. Family members say he felt strongly about serving this country and was proud to serve in the Army, and in Iraq.

Born on September 4th, 1984, Carlo came to Spokane in 1997 from the Philippines. He leaves behind his mother, his wife Rosemarie and his 2-year-old son Kyle.

Carlo was just three months away from taking a scheduled leave to spend his December 26 anniversary with his wife.

That suspect was identified as 27-year-old Joel C. Taitch. He was found blocks away from the crime scene and booked for 2nd degree murder.
