September 2008 Senior Life Notes

Posted: Updated:

Congratulations!
We want to start off with congratulations to the Scavenger Hunt winners from the 14th Annual Senior Wellness Conference.

Joy Ledgerwood from North Spokane is the winner of the $200.00 grocery certificate.

Also congratulations to Linda Buob, Betty Stotts, Walter Estes, Lennard Chin, and Shirley Schmidt.  Each person wins a $25.00 gift certificate to Golden Corral.   Thank you to everyone who stopped by the KHQ Senior Life Booth and all our partner booths to say hi.

New Research
We start September with some new research on brain atrophy --- which is associated with Alzheimer's disease and other impaired cognitive function.   Research is now suggesting that Vitamin B12 can be a key to aging brain.  Take a look at the article to learn about some good food sources for the vitamin.

Arthritis Information
Are you concerned that some of those aches and pains you are feeling could be a sign of arthritis? If so, you can take the Arthritis Checkup to find out how serious the symptoms are.  Also, a health tip: Click here for some pain reliever side effects

Impact of Sleep Issues
If you are someone who is not getting enough sleep, Rockwood Retirement Communities Senior Learning Center Spotlight Story explains why you should change that.   Learn about the increased risk of falls for those who sleep less.

Legal Issues
If you are dealing with medicaid issues, we want to alert you to some great information provided by Spokane Elder Law Professionals, Sayre and Sayre.  This month they address gifting assets in order to qualify for medicaid.  Click Legal Resources to learn more.

Spokane Fair Information
On the subject of Senior Life Partners, if you are heading to the fair today, Avista is under the KHQ Tent. They have Wattson, the energy dog and crafts for the grandkids, plus they are distributing some of CFL bulbs.   Click here for the KHQ Fair page and scroll down to events and activities to learn more about Avista's visit as well as all the other things happening this week at the fair.

Travel Plans
Even if you live alone, you don't have to travel alone.  Travel Agent, Katie Shaler has contributed an article that explains how you can enjoy some travel in a group.

Stimulus Check Deadline
One more item before we leave you.  The phones rang off the hook for the KHQ Help Center on submitting claims for stimulus checks.  A reminder, the deadline is October 15th to file.  Here is the link to the stimulus check information if you are one of the many who have not filed yet.

We hope you continue to enjoy the beautiful fall weather.   We will visit with you again in October.
