Nuclear Meltdown No. 2

Posted: Updated:

Yesterday Macy has a major meltdown about school-well, about not wanting to go to school. She cried and begged me not to "make her" go to school. I took the coward's way out and rearranged my work schedule so I could pick her up after school. Last night she completely understood that was a one-time thing.

This morning she woke up sad and near tears again. She cried a little bit but was really trying to be brave and my heart was breaking for her-to see her trying to keep her emotions in check. We didn't talk about the elephant in the room and managed to get to daycare on time. But as we walked in her bravery slipped away and she launched herself at me and began to sob. I didn't want to leave Macy when she was still upset because I'm her mommy. Period. But I also didn't want to disrupt the rest of the kids and teachers. I took her to a quiet part of the building and held her and did my best to soothe her. Her crying was so loud teachers were coming out of their classrooms to see if everything was OK.

More than 20 minutes later she was still a mess and I was teetering on the edge myself. Having your child beg you to please not leave her is gut wrenching. I tried tough love, I tried bribery, it was getting ugly and nothing was working. It's amazing how all the progressive parenting skills seem to slip away in a time like that. I got her to a place where the crying stopped and once again the teachers there stepped up to help me-maybe it was the desperation on my face. They engaged her in a project and I kissed her goodbye. Walking out today was even harder than yesterday.

Yes, I cried on my way to work, again. Yes, I called Mike to talk it out with him, again. Both helped a little. Oh, and Yes, I was VERY late for work, again (But I don't regret it and so so thankful my boss can sympathize).  I love Macy and we're all working our way through it one day at a time (and thankfully Mike's back tomorrow so I'll get to tag-team him for some help!).
