USC squashes WSU, 69-0

Posted: Updated:

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) _ The Washington State football team got clobbered Saturday by Southern Cal, losing 69-0 to the Trojans.

It's the Cougars' largest margin of defeat since they began playing in 1894.

It also ended the Cougars' streak of scoring in 280 straight games dating to Sept. 15, 1984, when Ohio State beat them. That scoring streak was second-longest in the nation to Michigan's 295 games.

Going into the game, USC was ranked sixth in the nation.

In contrast, Washington State has allowed 66, 63, 66 and now 69 points in four of their conference losses. They have been outscored 385-111 this season.

On offense, Washington State never crossed midfield. Quarterback Kevin Lopina completed six of nine passes for 28 yards _ WSU's lowest passing output since 1975 _ with one interception.

Washington State had only four first downs in the game.

The Trojans outgained Washington State in yardage _ 625 to 116 for the game.

Washington State has a bye next week, and then play at Stanford on Nov. 1.
