November 2008 Senior Life Notes

Posted: Updated:

Welcome to a chilly start to November.

If this weather is making you crave some good, hot soup we have found some recipes for you on the Senior Life page.   Among them...  Bacon & Baked Potato Soup, Chicken 'n' Dumplings, and Taco soup.  Click here to go directly to the recipe soup section.

Now onto a very important subject.  Please mark your calendars for November 15th. That is when open enrollment begins for Medicare Part D.   During this open enrollment, nearly 40 million people, who are eligible for Medicare, can select their health coverage for the upcoming year.

To help you with questions, KHQ is opening it's Help Center on Friday, November 14th, during the evening newscasts. Aging and Long Term Care of Eastern Washington, which manages SHIBA (Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors) will be manning the phones.

SHIBA will be available from 5pm until 6:30 to answer your questions.  Again, that date is Friday, November 14th.  In the meantime, Click here to learn more about Medicare Open Enrollment.

November Health Tips:
1. Mixing Drinks with Medicine:  The Cleveland Clinic recently did research that found that as people age, they become more sensitive to effects of alcohol.  Click here for the impact on some common medications

2. End of Life Care:  It is a hard subject to address but at some point we all need to talk about  end of life care issues.   How do seniors often address those issues?  This is new research on the subject.  Click here to read the entire article.

Senior Life Partner Information:
That brings us to some important information from some of our partners.  Each month Sayre and Sayre share information on commonly asked legal questions about elder issues.  This month they address the issue:  "Why do I need a Community Property Agreement when I live in a Community Property State?'  You can read the article or visit an online video on  In addition to this issue -- there are a variety of commonly asked legal questions that are addressed by Sayre and Sayre on the legal resources page.

It is also that time of year when you need to take inventory of how efficient your home is.  Are the windows insulated? Is your furnace running properly?  Avista has a page dedicated to that information.  There are special sections you can click for information -- including help if you find it difficult paying your utility bill.  Here is the link to the Avista Cares page.  While you are on that page visit the videos to make sure your home is well insulated and you stay comfortable and safe this winter.

Contest Alerts
Finallly, we want to remind you about a few contests happening on

1. Contest A Day. has teamed up with local businesses to help save you money and shop locally.  So each day we are announcing a new contest. You have the entire day to enter to win.  The winner is announced the next day. Here is the link to Contest A Day.

2. Food Services of America has teamed up with and several local restaurants to give the chef in your house a break this Thanksgiving.  Click here to enter to win Thanksgiving Dinner at a local restaurant.  Winners will be announced each week.

3. And, there are just a couple weeks left to participate in the Rockwood Retirement Community's Quality Preference Survey.  Rockwood Retirement wants to learn how they can better serve the community with future building needs.  It is a short questionnaire and if you fill it out you are entered to win an evening of elegance at Rockwood Retirement South for you and 9 friends.  An amazing dinner will be prepared by Rockwood South's French Chef and paired with wines selected by local author and wine expert, Candace Frasher.  Here is the link if you would like to participate in the Rockwood Retirement Community's Survey.

We hope you have wonderful November and a Happy Thanksgiving.  Please be sure to visit Senior Life often throughout the month for new articles and information.

Have a great day!
