Track Your Family History

Posted: Updated:

Tracking your family's medical history is important to help you know your future health risks.  Your family history also is a great guide for doctors who can give you preventive health tips and screenings and medical exams that can catch any complications early on.

Be sure to include the following:

  • Blood related relatives including half brothers and half sisters.
  • Medical conditions and age the family member was diagnosed.
  • Medical treatments family members have received.
  • Cause of death.

The United States Department of Health and Human Services has a great tool available for download.  Visit http://www.hhs.gov and download the "My Family Health Portait" tool.  It is a simply program that helps you keep track and builds a family tree of your family's medical history.
