Tigers at Cat Tales celebrate first birthday

Posted:
SPOKANE, Wash. - Zoo keepers at Cat Tales have four reasons to be thankful this week: Tuga, Koshka, Malenky and Sestra. The four Siberian tiger cubs were born one year ago at the zoological park in North Spokane.

Zoo keepers estimate there are fewer than 400 Siberian tigers in the wild.

The four cubs have gained more than 200 pounds since their birth on November 24, 2007. The boys weigh about 250 pounds, and the girls weigh about 200 pounds, according to Debbie Wyche, a zookeeper at the park.

Park owners are planning a party to celebrate the birthday: They're offering free admission to kids under 12 years of age this Sunday, November 30th. The park will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with special party activities for the Siberian cubs at 1 p.m.

Only 3 of the cubs will be on display this weekend-Tuga, a 250 pound male, recently broke his leg while roughhousing with his brother, Koshka.

Tuga is being held in a separate holding pen while his leg heals. Veterinarians wrapped his hind leg in a cast covered by duct tape. Tuga's leg is expected to take 4-6 weeks to heal.
