Verner calls skating championships 'biggest sporting event ever staged in Spokane'

Promoters Star USA joined Spokane's Mayor on Thursday to unveil a countdown clock counting the days until the U.S. Figure Skating Championships come to Spokane.

SPOKANE, Wash. -Mayor Mary Verner on Thursday predicted the 2010 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, held exactly one year from today, would be the biggest sporting event ever staged in Spokane.

Verner joined promoters with Star USA to begin the countdown to the big day: January 15, 2010 - a celebration dubbed "One Year Out".  The Mayor challenged local businesses and others to boost their support for the competition, which takes place just 18 days before the Olympic games in Vancouver.

"If these Championships are to live up to their full promise, then the selfless spirit of contribution Spokane is so famous for must shine through," said Verner.

As part of the celebration, Star USA unveiled a countdown clock at River Park Square in downtown Spokane.

"Today we're officially on the clock," said Toby Steward, President of Star USA and chairman of the 2010 Championships.

In an effort to get more people involved in the event, Star USA came up with a Top Ten list: ten ways to play an active part in the success of the competition:

  1. Be "On the Clock"   Be aware of how many days there are until the Championships
  2. Welcome your friends and family with a personalized email invitation.
  3. Join the party.  Of course, by that they mean buy tickets.
  4. Be leaders by organizing co-workers and others to stay informed about the Championships and plan activities and initiatives.
  5. Use STA.  Spokane Transit will be providing shuttle service during the competition.
  6. Consider "flex time".  Star USA encourages businesses to allow workers to adjust their schedule so they can attend the events.
  7. Support local heroes by helping those who want to volunteer.
  8. Be the perfect host by helping visitors find restaurants, hotels or other attractions.
  9. Take part in FanFest.  This event will take place at River Park Square during the Championships, giving fans the opportunity to get autographs from the skaters and take part in free activities and events.
  10. Spread the joy!

KHQ.COM - Most mothers can only hope by the time their children grow up and move out of the house, they've learned all the necessary things to be a successful adult, including the basic knowledge that a turkey must be cooked in an oven, or perhaps in a smoker... NOT in a microwave. For this reason a new prank-challenge going around on Facebook is resulting in some hilarious text conversations between mothers and their grown children.
