Central Washington to go it alone, keep football program
ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Central Washington University plans to go it alone. Despite Western Washington University's decision this month to drop its football program, the Ellensburg school says it has no plans to follow suit.
Yesterday, athletic director Jack Bishop said in a statement that Central Washington is fully committed to sponsoring football at the NCAA Division II school.
This month, Western Washington announced it was dropping its football program because of financial problems and looming budget cuts from the state.
The Wildcats will continue to play in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, along with Western Oregon, Humboldt State in California and Dixie State in Utah. But the loss of Western Washington creates a big hole in the Central Washington football schedule, including the loss of the annual Battle in Seattle game played at Qwest Field since 2003.
