Record-setting Indiana quarterback signs with Shock
SPOKANE, Wash. - When the Spokane Shock take the field for the first time in 2009, they'll have a new quarterback in their arsenal. Former Indiana standout Blake Powers signed with the team Monday and said he's happy to have the opportunity to play in Spokane.
Powers, 6-4 233, holds the single season touchdown passing record at Indiana University. As a sophomore, he passed for 22 touchdowns. The previous record of 17 touchdowns was set by Antwaan Randle El in 1999.
Powers graduated from the Hoosiers' program in 2007 after playing in 28 games.
af2 League President Jerry Kurz, whose son played with Powers in college, said he is a real "team player".
"Blake is a team player. He is the prototypical pro-style quarterback," Kurz said in a news release issued by the Shock no Monday. "His dad was a big strong tight end at Indiana and Blake has the arm strength that is tremendous for our league."
The Shock open the 2009 season at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena April 3.
