Colville soldier killed in helicopter crash in Iraq

FORT DRUM, N.Y.- Four Fort Drum aviators were killed January 26, including one airman from Colville, Washington. The crash in northern Iraq involved two OH-58D Kiowa helicopters.

According to the Department of Defense, the cause of the crash is unclear right now, but it does not appear to have been caused by enemy action. An investigation is ongoing.

Among the fallen was Chief Warrant Officer 2 Benjamin Todd from Colville.

Todd, 29, joined the armed forces in October or 2000. He completed his Warrant Officer training in 2005 and came to Fort Drum to fly the Kiowa Warrior in November of 2007. He deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in October 2008.

Todd's awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Expert Infantry Badge, the Parachutist Badge and posthumously, the Bronze Star Medal.

Benjamin Todd is survived by his wife and child.

The three other killed in the crash, 35 year-old Chief Warrant Officer 3 Philip Windorski of Minnesota, 30 year-old Chief Warrant Officer 2 Matthew Kelley of Missouri, and 31 year-old Chief Warrant Officer 2 Joshua Tillery of Oregon.

Officers arrived to find a 57-year-old man who lived at the complex sitting outside with a head injury. He died at a hospital.

According to court documents, several men contacted authorities about the parlor, Space Oil Massage, and told them that the women who worked there asked them in private to call 911 because they were being forced to perform sex acts against their will.
