SPOKANE, Wash. - University's Spencer Drury had a career night by scoring 22 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome a tenacious Central Valley team in Tuesday night's Stinky Sneaker spirit game at Spokane Arena.  The Bears beat the Titans 65-52 in a game that was closer than the score might suggest.

As in most "spirit" games, both teams threw their respective records out the window and played a spirited game to the end.  University came out with emotion, grabbing more rebounds in the first quarter than points to make the score 9-4 in favor of Central Valley.  University finished the night with 36 rebounds to CV's 24.

Both teams turned the ball over 11 times.

Central Valley came alive in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the Titans 21-10, including a 3-point shot at the buzzer by CV's Brad Whitley that momentarily seemed to take the life out of a University team that until then showed no signs of giving up.  Whitley finished the game with seven points.

Michael Williams was the Bears' leading scorer with 19, eclipsing his season average by seven points.  J.C. Agen scored 17 and pulled down nine rebounds.

Central Valley girls beat Titans

After trailing at halftime, the Central Valley girls team depended on stellar play by three freshman to beat University 57-48 at the Arena.

Whitney Black scored 14 for the Bears, including a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter to knock the wind of University's sails.  Brooke Galloway scored 16 and Katie Estey added 12.

And the winner is...

They lost both games on the court Tuesday night, but in the end University came out on top in the Stinky Sneaker contest.  The judges awarded the coveted spirit award to the Titans for showing exceptional spirit, and for their creative halftime performances.

That gives University two out of the three spirit awards this year between the two schools.  Central Valley won the Greasy Pig (football), University won the Battle of the Bone (wrestling) and the Stinky Sneaker (basketball).
