Idaho officials: Discount plans are not insurance

BOISE, Idaho. - The Idaho Department of Insurance is warning consumers that discount plans are not the same thing as health insurance plans.

Department of Insurance leaders say they've gotten an increase in the number of calls from Idaho residents asking about health plans offered by companies that aren't licensed insurers.

Some people who have lost their jobs and health insurance are considering discount plans to make up the gap.

Gina McBride, the department's consumer affairs officer, says the discount plans leave consumers unprotected because they are largely unregulated.

Some discount plans provide members with a list of health care providers who offer a discount for their services. Consumers are still responsible for all the medical expenses they incur, and aren't reimbursed by the plan.
