Cusick boys sneak past Sunnyside and into Semis
YAKIMA, Wash. - Spencer Shanholtzer took a pass at half-court from Tyler Edwards and sank a driving layup as time expired to lift Cusick past two-time defending champion Sunnyside Christian 51-49 in the Class 1B state quarterfinals Thursday.
Both teams maneuvered for a final shot with the score knotted at 49. With 12 seconds left, Sunnyside Christian's attempt was short of the basket, and the Panthers got the ball back and called time out with four seconds left.
Under his own basket, Dustin Villegas threaded the inbounds pass to Edwards at midcourt, who then passed off to Shanholtzer for the winning drive.
The win sends the Panthers (20-5) into Friday's 8 p.m. semifinal against Moses Lake Christian.
Shanholtzer finished with a game-high 18 points and Riley Bauer added 12. Steven Broersma paced Sunnyside Christian (12-12) with 14 points, and Trevor Wagenaar had 11.
