Washington State Patrol pilots targeted with laser

FIFE, Wash. - In a wake of recent stories about how airlines are being targeted with laser pointers, recent footage by Washington State Patrol shows how blinding a laser pointer can be to a pilot even at an altitude of 2,000 feet.

On January 29, 2009, Troopers in a WSP airplane were targeted with a laser pointer in the Fife area.  The WSP airplane was initially hit with a green laser and the Tactical Flight Officer (TFO) was able to turn the airplane's Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) camera on the residential area the initial laser targeting came from.  The individual soon tried it again, and the TFO was able to identify the individual's location.  The airplane stayed on location over the individual's residence until Pierce County Deputies were able to make contact with the individual.

The individual was not arrested at the scene. However, a person can be indicted under the Patriot Act for interfering with aircraft pilots, and charges by the Pierce County Prosecutors Office are considered pending and should be filed by the end of this month.
