March 2009 Senior Life Notes

Posted: Updated:

In this edition of the Senior Life Newsletter numerous articles about finance are highlighted, plus an in-depth look at reverse mortgages.  Our senior life partners provide information on energy-cost assistance, Osteoporosis prevention and upcoming events.

Read on for articles, events, and partner information.

Avista would like to stress for seniors and their caregivers the availability of assistance should it be needed with their Avista bill. So many people just don't know what to do if they suspect an error on their bill or that there is more energy assistance grant money available this year for those in need than there has been in years before.

The very best thing people can do is to call Avista first and immediately -- 800.227.9187 -- if there are billing questions, if there is a problem paying the bill, or if they want to set up a payment plan like Comfort Level Billing, in which their bill for the year is averaged and spread equally over 12 months.

Craig at Fitness Together wants to remind us all that as you age the mechanism that controls the rebuilding of bone becomes less efficient. The structure of our bones weakens over time. This increases the likelihood that a fracture may occur.  Exercise does not have to be complicated to be effective.  There are many simple things you can do at home to help prevent Osteoporosis.  Read more by clicking here.

How much do you know about reverse mortgages?   It can seem like a daunting idea, but reverse mortgages are very safe and in fact, were designed and are insured by the Federal Government.  Reverse Mortgages can protect seniors and allow them to maintain financial independence.  Did you also know that you could use a reverse mortgage in whatever manner you choose?  You can even pay off an existing mortgage or make home repairs.   Plus, you retain full ownership of your home - even if you pass away, your heirs still have a choice with respect to what happens to the home - the bank isn't going to come and take the home away.  They really are quite interesting.  If you'd like to know more about reverse mortgages, visit the Financial Affairs page on Senior Life at and contact one of our partners.

Through April 15th each year, the AARP Tax-Aide program offers free one-on-one counselling, as well as assistance on the telephone and internet to help individuals prepare basic tax forms.   Click here to find the Tax-Aide site nearest to you!

In this economy, people of all ages are weary of the dreaded pink slip, but for seniors who may find themselves as job seekers for the first time in quite some time are discovering an entirely new employment universe.  A paperless, electronic world may mean that the interaction that was once the first step now comes much later.  Read more about it, here.

Plus, it's almost keep an eye on our articles for tax tips!

Where can you turn for the resources you need and sound advice on how to protect you and your money?  AARP Washington presents "Taking Charge in Tough Times" in Spokane June 3, 2009 and in the Tri-Cities April 8, 2009.   Visit the Senior Life page and click on AARP Washington for more information on how you can be a part of this free event!

Aging in Place - Design your Future.  That is the topic of a daylong event at Southside Senior Center. The event will happen on Saturday, March 14th from 9am to 4pm.  The event is free to the public.
