Rogers rally falls short against Columbia River; W. Valley girls advance

SPOKANE, Wash. - Making their first appearance in the state tournament in 34 years, the boys from Rogers High School fell into the consolation bracket, losing 57-51 to Columbia River on Wednesday.

Jesse Vaughn, this year's leading scorer in the Greater Spokane League, led all scorers with 18.  But defensively, the Pirates couldn't stop Steven Bjornstad.  The 6'10" center committed to Nevada scored 17 points and 12 rebounds.  Kyle Nelson added 14, including three 3-pointers for the Chieftains.

The Pirates play Capital Thursday at 2 p.m. in the consolation bracket.

Shadle 42, Franklin 67
TACOMA, Wash. - Well, Shadle's run was good while it lasted.  Their bumpy road to the State 3A finals ended Wednesday morning almost as quickly as it started, losing to top-seeded Franklin 67-42.   Read more by clicking here.


Shadle 59, Ferndale 32
The Shadle girls fared much better than the boys, advancing to the second round of the tournament with a lopsided win over Ferndale.  Bianca Hope scored 18 and added nine rebounds for the Highlanders.  Kendra Knutsen scored 12.  Shadle will face Prairie Thursday at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

West Valley 34, Burlington-Edison
West Valley depended on the Hanna Love's game-high 13 points to rally from behind and beat Burlington-Edison in the 2A tournament,  Nicki Lawless added 10 points, hitting a 3-point shot in the fourth quarter that gave West Valley the lead for good.  West Valley plays Hockinson in the second round Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
