Starting July 1st, 2018 all standard Washington State ID cards will be marked with "Federal Limits Apply" on the top right corner. The driver's license is still good for driving and standard identification but those three words indicate that the ID is not valid for federal identification purposes.
The ID cannot be used to board a plane or enter federal buildings starting October 1st, 2020. The Real ID act is a federal law, which was passed by congress in 2005. It requires state driver's licenses and ID cards to have security enhancements to travel or enter a federal facility. More changes come later in the year. Starting September 4th, 2018 all driver's license and id cards will receive new drivers license numbers.
They will have "WDL" as the first three letters followed by nine randomly chosen letters and numbers. Those who already have an id or license will get that new number once they renew or replace it after September 4th. This change is to help protect personal information.
You still have until October 1st, 2020 to become Real ID compliant. For more information click here.
