Crews tackle timber fire near Newport by land and air

UPDATE:  5:57 p.m.

Deputies say the fire is now around four to five acres but the fire is 50 percent surrounded, and that air crews have mostly stopped the fire from progressing.

Fire crews responded to a two-acre timber fire near Newport Thursday afternoon.

The exact location of the fire is in the 600-block of Scotia Road just off of Highway 2 and Gray Road.

The Pend Oreille County Sheriff's Office said crews from South Pend Oreille Fire as well as Pend Oreille and Spokane County fought the flames, with air support from the Washington State Department of National Resources.

Several viewers called KHQ to report they saw planes getting water from Diamond Lake.

No structures were threatened as of 4:50 p.m. Thursday.
