Cyclist hospitalized in crash with Spokane Police vehicle

Spokane Police say Upriver Drive is back open Tuesday night after a crash between a bicyclist and a Spokane Police Officer and his department owned vehicle.

The crash happened around 5 p.m. in the area of Upriver and Haven That's when the officer radioed into dispatch to say he'd been involved in a collision in the 2900 block of east Upriver. The officer said the crash involved a bicyclist that had been seriously injured and asked responding officers to close the road.

Investigators say the cyclist was southbound on Haven, rode through a stop sign, and collided with the officer who was eastbound on Upriver. The bicyclist collided with the driver's side of the police car, breaking the driver's side mirror off and shattering the drivers side front window. The officer had some cuts on his face from the glass.

Investigators have interviewed witnesses from the scene and have also collected video of the crash taken from the area. The video reportedly shows the cyclist running the stop sign and the officer taking evasive maneuvers to avoid the crash.

The bicyclist was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries, but they are expected to be OK.
