BAYVIEW, Idaho - A woman is dead and two others remain in serious condition after a man armed with a hammer attacked their family in their Bayview home Sunday afternoon.
43-year-old Patricia Heath was pronounced dead shortly before 1:00 p.m. Monday from massive head trauma.
The man accused of attacking the family is 31-year-old Larry Cragun. He is facing a long list of felony charges that will now include murder.
The Kootenai County Sheriff says the attack happened around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Cragun walked into a Bayview bar shortly after 1:30 p.m. confessing to people there what he had just done.
"He said someone needs to call 911 because I think I just killed a bunch of people. I had my hammer on me, luckily I carry my hammer" said Robert Deimler, Bayview resident. "I didn't really believe him at first because I really didn't see a lot of blood on him."
Deimler ran up to the victim's house to find a bloody mess and three of them badly beaten. He was able to talk to one of the victim's that only suffered minor injuries.
"He said he just came in swinging a hammer and a knife," said Deimler. "No indication, nothing. He came in and just started hitting people."
Neighbors say Cragun had called the police on the victim's home before because he thought they were breaking into his home to steal his food. Cragun also started posting fliers around town claiming a government conspiracy.
"He says the Navy has something buried in the lake that reads mind waves, and he's accused people of raping him, his kid, his wife," said Deimler.
Neighbors say they didn't think he would turn violent, but weren't surprised that he snapped.
"Not since I found out that he had been irrational lately, then it didn't come as a big surprise," said Herb Huseland, neighbor.
"I didn't think he'd do anything stupid like that. I can't see where anyone has a mindset to do anything like that," said Deimler.
Larry Cragun is being held at the Kootenai County Jail on $1 million bond. The attempted murder charges could change of the victim's conditions worsen.
The four victims are Lorraine Wallis, 58, Patricia Heath, 43, Michael Heath, 40, and Jedidiah Heath, 21. Patricia Heath suffered the worst injuries. Lorraine Wallis and Jedidiah Heath remain in serious condition. Michael Heath refused medical condition at the scene.
