The Spokane County Health District confirmed the first case of flu in Spokane County this year.
A man in his 70s was admitted into Valley Hospital in mid-September with flu like symptoms. He was treated and later released. The lab work came back this week confirming that he did have the flu.
Last year Spokane County reported 15 flu-related deaths. Also, the first confirmed case of the flu last year didn't come until November 7th.
The health district recommends people get their flu vaccine immediately. While they say the early case is not an indication this will be a particularly bad flu season, it does mean that flu season has arrived early, so it is important to get a flu shot as soon as possible. They say the old recommendation was to get the shot in November, but that is no longer the case.
