KKK flyers say they're watching neighbors in Kootenai County

Tuesday, several people in Hayden, Idaho, reached out to KHQ saying they found flyers by their front doors from the KKK. One flyer said "the Klan is watching and we do not like what you are doing!"

Some neighbors told KHQ this is an unwelcome message.

"Take that stuff somewhere else. We don't need it in the neighborhood," said Harry Moody.

"It's honestly really scary," said Torry Winebarger. "Just got a newborn and family and stuff. It just doesn't feel safe."

The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office also received the flyers Tuesday. Lt. Stu Miller said this happens once or twice a year.

"The community has changed as a whole but you still have one or two of those guys trying to push an agenda trying to rebuild what they think they had," said Lt. Miller.

Lt. Miller said homeowners do have options if they do not want to receive these kind of flyers in the future.

"The easiest thing you can do is throw it in the garbage," said Miller. He added the KKK can legally put the flyers on your front step unless you have a no trespassing sign or "unless that person has a notice posted, verbal or written, to the offender saying 'I don't want your stuff.'" If the group puts another flyer by your door after you put out that notice, Lt. Miller said that would in violation of Idaho code 18-7029 and would be a misdemeanor.
