SPOKANE, Wash. - The man accused of Homicide by Abuse in the death of 4-year-old Summer Phelps has been found guilty by a Spokane County jury.
Jurors began deliberations at 9 a.m. Friday after two weeks of testimony about the death of Phelps. Jonathan Lytle, who was emotionless when the verdict was delivered, could receive up to life in prison for his conviction. Officials say the average sentence is 640 months or just more than 53 years.
A Spokane county deputy prosecutor called the Lytle's apartment on north Monroe a "torture chamber" where summer was beaten, burned, shocked, and starved.
Jonathan Lytle's defense lawyer has said his client worked long hours to support his family and was gone when most of the abuse occurred.
However, a neighbor testified during the trial that he heard both parents in the bathroom on the night of summer's death.
Jonathan's wife, Adriana, is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to Homicide by Abuse and faces up to 20 years in prison.
