Man Sleeping On Oregon Tracks Killed By Train

WARREN, Ore. - The Columbia County sheriff says a 29-year-old man apparently sleeping on railroad tracks was struck and killed by a freight train in the northwest Oregon town of Warren.

Sheriff Jeff Dickerson said Joshua Allen Payne of Warren was dead at the scene early Tuesday.

The sheriff says operators of the Portland & Western Railroad train saw the body of a man on the tracks, sounded the horn and applied the brakes but the half-mile-long train was unable to stop in time.

Dickerson says witnesses indicate the man on the tracks did become aware of the train, but was unable to move in time. The train was traveling about 25 miles per hour.

The tracks at that point are adjacent to the Columbia River Highway.
